The Cathedral Church of St. Luke

The Cathedral Church of St. Luke

BY Michael Poliskey

I got a chance recently to shoot some video and photos inside the Cathedral Church of St. Luke on State Street here in Portland, Me. If you’re driving down State Street after crossing Congress, it’s right there on your left. The church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, which has 58 ministries total here in Maine and has been on State Street since 1868. More on the church here on its Wikipedia listing.

While there I was able to capture some video footage of St. Luke’s as well as taking a few 360° photos with my Ricoh Theta Z1 to put together a small virtual tour for St. Luke’s.

The Video

I shot everything at 60fps with my Sony A7sii on a slider mounted tripod. From there I slow down the footage in post and edit clips to match the beat of the music. Final step is to import my motion graphics into the project.

360° Virtual Tour

I mentioned earlier I use the Ricoh Theta Z1 camera with the ‘Dual Fisheye Plugin’ to take these shots. When the photos come out of the camera they are just about black, but then I adjust Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, and all that kind of stuff to get it to look as nice as I can. Then you bring into Photoshop and remove the tripod from the shot. If you see these types of tours and wonder “where is the tripod?”. Photoshop > Lasso Tool > Content Aware Fill.

Really happy with the way everything turned out. I would love to shoot more video there, maybe some drone shots too to capture that stained glass! It’s a beautiful church!
